Introduction
Today, I’ll explain how to properly install concrete fasteners known as Drop-In Anchors.
What is a Drop-In Anchor?
- A Drop-In Anchor is a female anchor designed only for solid concrete.
- These anchors cannot be used in brick or block base materials.
- Anchor size is based on the inside diameter.
- The hole to be drilled must match the outside diameter of the anchor.
Example: A 1/4" Drop-In Anchor requires a 3/8" drilled hole.
Step 1: Drill the Hole
- Use a hammer drill for the best results.
- Insert the correct size bit and set your drilling depth using either:
- The drill’s depth gauge, or
- A piece of tape wrapped around the bit.
- Wear proper eye and ear protection.
- Set the drill to hammer mode and drill until you reach the marked depth.
Step 2: Clean the Hole
For the anchor to hold securely, the hole must be free of dust and debris. Use one of the following:
- A wire brush and vacuum
- Compressed air
Step 3: Insert the Anchor
- Place the Drop-In Anchor into the hole with the open end facing up.
- Tap it lightly with a hammer until it’s flush with the surface.
Step 4: Set the Anchor
- Insert the setting tool into the anchor.
- Strike the tool with a hammer until the lip of the anchor meets the lip of the setting tool.
This confirms the anchor is properly set.
Step 5: Attach the Fixture
- Position your fixture over the anchor.
- Insert a machine-threaded bolt through the fixture and into the anchor.
- Tighten the bolt until the fixture is secure.
